# What Is Rhodium Plating?

In Turkish jewellery terminology, “rodaj” means applying a thin layer of rhodium to a piece of jewellery by electroplating. The aim is a bright, white finish. The rhodium electrolyte, operating conditions and surface preparation must be considered together.

### What Does Rhodium Plating Offer?

Rhodium is a precious metal in the platinum group. Its white, reflective appearance makes it a popular decorative finish for white gold and silver jewellery. “Rhodium plated” describes a surface coating over a base metal; it does not mean that the entire piece is made of rhodium.

Plating enhances the appearance, but cannot correct deep scratches, pores or poor polishing on its own. A good result begins with a properly prepared surface.

### Are All Rhodium Plating Products the Same?

Bottle volume alone is not enough to select a product. Consider the rhodium content, suitability for bath or pen plating, operating conditions and desired finish. The metal content of a concentrate is different from the metal concentration of a working bath.

For example, Umicore describes [RHODUNA® J1](https://www.rodaj.net/en/rhoduna-j1/) as a brilliant white rhodium electrolyte for jewellery, watches and spectacle frames. Its product page specifies crack-free coatings of 0.1–0.3 µm. This is a product-specific range, not a universal thickness for all rhodium baths.

Each product has its own technical data sheet.

Voltage, current density, temperature, time and anode selection depend on the product. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions rather than copying settings used for a different bath.

### How Is Plating Done Correctly?

The following sequence is a general framework for planning workshop operations. The alloy, gemstones and product instructions determine the required steps and their order.

-

#### Prepare the Surface

Complete the necessary polishing and check for surface defects before plating.

-

#### Clean the Jewellery

Remove polishing residues, oil and dirt using an appropriate method. Assess whether ultrasonic cleaning is suitable for the jewellery and its stones.

-

#### Complete Degreasing and Rinsing

Use the degreasing process recommended for the product. Rinse between stages to prevent residues being carried into the next bath.

-

#### Determine the Required Pretreatment

Assess activation and undercoat requirements according to the base metal and manufacturer’s instructions.

-

#### Apply the Rhodium Coating

Check the electrical contact. Operate the bath under the conditions specified in the electrolyte’s technical data sheet.

-

#### Perform Final Rinsing and Drying

Leave no chemical residues on the surface and choose a drying method suitable for the jewellery.

-

#### Check the Result

Check colour, brightness and surface uniformity. Where required, verify coating thickness using an appropriate measurement method.

### How Can You Maintain Bath Efficiency?

When an item leaves the bath, liquid remaining on it is carried into the next rinse. This drag-out can waste precious-metal-bearing solution and contaminate rinse water. Suitable racking, controlled withdrawal and process-appropriate draining can help reduce this loss.

Monitor rinsing and bath maintenance, and limit chemical carry-over between stages. Bath condition and process records help identify issues beyond the final plating step. Separate assessment of spent baths and metal-bearing rinses for recovery is also part of the process.

### Is Rhodium Plating Permanent? How Should It Be Cared For?

Rhodium plating can wear over time, particularly at points exposed to friction, revealing the base metal. GIA also notes that rhodium on white gold gradually wears and may need renewal. A single replacement interval cannot be specified for every piece of jewellery.

Protect jewellery from abrasive cleaning and harsh chemicals. Select cleaning methods according to the gemstone, any treatments and its setting. Ultrasonic cleaning is not suitable for every stone; consult your jeweller if unsure.
